The Geography of Donald Trump's Supporters

The New York Times has conducted some interesting analysis of the the geospatial spread of Donald Trump's support. In a big surprise to almost nobody it shows that Trump is performing best among less affluent and less educated voters in the south.

Donald Trump’s Strongest Supporters includes an interactive choropleth map showing Republican voters estimated to support Trump at district level. If you hover over a district on the map you can view the percentage of Trump's estimated support.

The map shows that Donald Trump has a large level of support in the eastern states, "stretching from the Gulf Coast, up the spine of the Appalachian Mountains, to upstate New York". The Times article includes a comparison of the Trump supporters map with a map of internet searches for racial slurs and racist jokes.

There does seem to be a very strong correlation between a map of where people make racially charged internet searches and a map of Trump's supporters. Not that anyone is calling Trump's supporters racist.
