1911 New York Street View
Yesterday the New York Public Library announced that more than 180,000 items in its Digital Collections are now available in the public domain. The items include maps, photographs, letters, posters, manuscripts, sheet music, drawings and other texts, all of which you can download in high-resolution and without restriction from the Digital Collections website.
The material provides a great resource for developers, especially for anyone interested in creating history maps. For example the NYPL has created a great example application using Google Maps and photos from Fifth Avenue taken in 1911. Street View, Then & Now: New York City's Fifth Avenue allows you to take a virtual stroll down Fifth Avenue in Street View while comparing today's New York to photos taken at the beginning of the Twentieth Century.
