Cyclone Phailin Crisis Maps and Person Finder
Cyclone Phailin is due to make landfall close to the city of Gopalpur in India later today. Winds are expected to reach up to 167 mph and a storm surge of at least 3m (10ft) is expected when the cyclone reaches land.
Google has released a Crisis Map for the area, showing the predicted path of the cyclone and the location of shelters & hospitals. Crisis Mappers has also released a Google Crisis Map, which shows the location of hospitals and shelters and in addition shows the location of control rooms and storm surge information. The storm surge layer shows when the storm surge is expected to hit different locations along the coast and the predicted height of the surge.
Google has also released Google Person Finder for those who are worried about friends and relatives living in the cyclone's path. Google Person Finder allows anyone to post information about the status of individuals or to search for the status of relatives or friends affected by Cyclone Phailin.
