The Children's Lottery

If you want to succeed in life then you probably need to win the birthplace lottery. According to a new study, The Equality of Opportunity Project, where you grow-up can have a huge influence on how well you can improve your economic success.

The New York Times has mapped the results of the study to county level. Click on a county on
The Best and Worst Places to Grow Up: How Your Area Compares map and you can see how much more or less (than the average) a child born to a poor family is likely to earn at aged 26.

The map suggests that children who grow-up in the South-East have lost the childhood lottery and have little chance of earning as much as the average 26 year old when they grow. The best places to grow-up if you want economic success seem to be in parts of the Midwest and Utah & Wyoming.
