3d Historical Maps

The Map Library of Catalonia has georeferenced 1,855 of its collection of historical maps. Catoteca Digital is a Google Map which allows you to search georectified maps from around the world by location.

If you select a map's marker on the map and click on the 'Georeferencer' link you can view the historical map overlaid on top of a Google Map. The overlaid map includes an opacity control so that you can adjust the opacity of the historical map and compare it with the modern map underneath.

The georeferenced map also includes a link to view the map in 3d. Select the '3d' link and the Google Earth plug-in will load, allowing you to view your selected historical map on top of Google Earth's 3d terrain.

Mapire is a Google Map interface that allows you to explore historical maps of the Habsburg Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The historical maps from the Second Military Survey (1806–1869) cover a huge area of Europe, from Austria in the west to Romania in the east.

Using Mapire it is possible to view maps from the Second Military Survey covering the whole of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The map includes quick links to different regions within the Empire and a handy transparency tool, which allows you to adjust the opacity of the historical map overlays.

Mapire also allows you to view their historical map collection in 3d, using the Google Earth plug-in.
