Mapping the Women's Movement
Mapping the Long Women’s Movement is a Google Map that aims to create an oral history of women who have blazed new trails for other women, or simply taken charge of their own lives in dramatic ways.
The map allows the user to listen to each of the mapped women's voices directly from the map. It is possible to select an individual marker on the map and then click on the soundcloud player to listen to each individual's account of how they were affected by or contributed to civil rights and gender equality.
From Emma Lazarus’ poem engraved on the Statue of Liberty, to the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, to Barbra Streisand’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Jewish women’s history is written on the streets of North America. The Jewish Women’s Archive's On the Map, is a Google Map dedicated to the stories of Jewish women.
With 'On the Map', the Jewish Women’s Archive hope users can plan walking tours of new cities or discover sites in their own neighborhood. On the Map will also allow researchers to locate and share important sites, help teachers plan real or virtual field trips, and empower those using it to play a role in mapping the heritage of Jewish Women.
