The Google Maps of the Week
If you are a dedicated follower of Google Maps you probably saw pictures or videos of the game Map Dive on a panoramic Liquid Galaxy system at Google I/O. The good news is that you can now play the game on your desktop computer.
In Map Dive you get to free fall on Google Maps and land on famous monuments around the world. During your free fall you have to steer Pegman through a series of hoops, collect stars and land successfully.
Cycleroute.org uses the Google Maps API Elevation Service to provide a great elevation profile of cycle routes.
Enter a starting point and a destination into Cycleroute.org (or just drag the two markers on the map to your required locations) and a suggested bike route is displayed on the map. The elevation profile of the route is displayed beneath the map.
The top five steepest climbs on the route are highlighted in the profile. You can mouse-over the elevation profile to view where these climbs are located on the map. If you select the 'climbs and visualization' tab in the map side-panel you can also view the distance and grade of the steepest climbs.
Illustreets is a handy guide to discovering information about any address in England. The site uses data from the Index of Multiple Deprivation, house prices from Nestoria, local employment and crime rates, the average travel times to the nearest amenities and local school performance rates to provide an interesting overview for any location in England.
The Illustreets Google Map can be used by anyone in England to view how their address compares to other areas in terms of deprivation, house prices, employment rates etc. Click on the map or search for a specific address and a detailed breakdown of the area is displayed beneath the map.
