Can You Afford a House in Australia?
The Special Broadcasting Service has created an interactive map to visualize housing affordability in Australia. The map shows whether house prices in each Local Government Area (LGA) are affordable based on the average income in the area.
Mapping Australia: Housing Affordability provides choropleth views of housing affordability across Australia based on the average income of two different age groups (25-34 years old and 35-44). You can search the map by postcode. You can then choose to view housing affordability in the LGA based on a single person or a couple's average income in the area. You can also choose to view housing affordability in the area for a single unit or for a house.
When you select an LGA on the map you can also view details on the area's average income, the median house value, the estimated gross income needed to buy a house in the area and the earnings difference between the average income and the median house value.
