The British Museum on Street View
You can now explore the wonderful British Museum on Street View.
Enter the museum on Google Maps and you can step into the impressive Great Court with its beautiful tessellated glass roof. If you take a left out of the courtyard into Room 4 of the museum you can view the Rosetta Stone, the stone which provided the key to our modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs.
If you zoom-in on the stone you can even attempt to decipher the Greek, Demotic and Hieroglyphic texts for yourself.
If you carry on straight through Room 4 to the Parthenon Gallery you can examine the controversial Elgin Marbles. If you use the floor menu you can travel up to the third floor where you can see the British Museum's amazing collection of Egyptian mummies.
The whole of the museum seems to have Street View imagery, so I could continue with links to many more amazing exhibits in the British Museum, However you can also visit the British Museum on Google's Cultural Institute. With Google's Cultural Institute British Museum collection you can explore the new Street View imagery from the museum with added map markers.
The map markers on the Street View imagery in the Cultural Institute collection allows you to view detailed information about selected items from the museum.
You can also explore some of the items in the British Museum using Google's new Museum of the World timeline. This interactive timeline allows you to explore the British Museum's exhibits by time.
Travel along the timeline and you can discover more about objects from the British Museum’s collection from prehistory to the present day. Click on an exhibit and you can read a detailed description and even listen to British Museum curators as they share their insights on the selected object.
This WebGL timeline is a pretty impressive presentation of the British Museum's collection. Unfortunately it really needs a search option (something you think Google might have been good at).
