The New York Numbers Game

Despite the city's perverse house numbering system there is a secret trick to finding an address in New York. The secret is to remember that numbers get higher as you head towards the rivers and as you head north.

I Quant NY has created a handy map which visualizes this system by coloring properties by the number of each property address. On the map the higher addresses are shaded in a darker color and the lower address numbers are shaded in a lighter color. For example, in the screenshot above, you can clearly see that in the Upper East Side properties are shaded lighter to darker from west to east. In other words the nearer the property is to the East River then the higher the property number.
